I thought that the trip we had was spectacular and I was very happy with my entire stay in your wonderful home province. I went for the photos and I got plenty of those, but I also went for the comradery and the chat and the experience of a new place, and I got that too.

I appreciate organization and you had everything organized very well. I especially like that you had restaurants picked out and reserved in advance. I had many good meals in Newfoundland. You took very good care of everyone and were very thoughtful, providing a chair for Amita, and even making alternate arrangements for one group member who wanted to spend extra time with puffins instead of whales.

Our driver Ray was incredible too. In fact all the Newfoundlanders I met were welcoming and hospitable.

We wanted a unique experience and to see things not readily available on a large, commercial tour. This overnight tour was beyond amazing. We had a very personable, friendly, and professional guide to take us off the beaten path. And, that’s what we got. We went off the beaten path to see such amazing sights. Having a local drive and know where to go was such a help and a relief. I did a ton of research before our trip, but never heard of some of the things we did. Plus, he knew where to go, and had an entire army of friends, photographers, and locals that gave him leads on icebergs. We would have never found an iceberg if it wasn’t for his network of contacts and his knowledge of the area. I cannot say enough about Cory, our guide, or the amazing experience we had. Definitely a bucket list tour.

Bucket list tour! A definite must-do

I've often wondered how to turn fantasy into reality. The answer is Michael Winsor. I along with two companions just completed an eight-day tour in Newfoundland.

The tour included sites in Gros Morne National Park, Twillingate, Steady Brook and Fogo Island.

It was off-season and the weather was challenging. But MICHAEL made the trip a winning first class experience. Besides his patience, his people skills, his caring, Michael is a book of knowledge on the venues we visited. He selected the best photo shooting locations, the ideal camera settings for every situation, the best times to shoot depending on the location and conditions.

Michael knows every nook and cranny of the countryside better than the folks who live there.

The experience was transporting and we are already discussing a follow up trip to a different part of NFLD next year.

Michael is a gem of a person. I highly recommend Michael to anyone seeking a guide in NFLD. They don't come any better.

Turn Fantasy into Reality

My recent 3-day photography tour of St. John’s and Eastern Newfoundland was a wonderful and authentic experience, providing amazing opportunities for photography and more.

As a fully customized tour, the very personable, professional photographer Michael Winsor and I had a few calls beforehand to go over possible opportunities and subjects to shoot during the days of the tour, as well as advice to prepare for the trip. In line with the opportunities of the season, we travelled around by vehicle quite comfortably, with a central aim to shoot icebergs from different angles, while making stops, both planned and impromptu, along the way. We captured images in iconic but also lesser-known locations, from Bonavista to St. John’s across the Narrows at night time to other discoveries such as sea ice churned up by powerful waves in tiny fishing villages. Michael made great suggestions, adapting to whatever came up and optimizing the situations while keeping my interests in mind. He was more than willing to ensure attempts for the best potential light and conditions, including sunrises and sunsets, despite the cold and windy weather that we happened to be facing.

Michael is a celebrated landscape and wildlife photographer, with deep knowledge of and connection to Newfoundland (I encourage you to have a look at his stunning work!). I learned a great deal from him during these three days, not only upgrading my own skills due to his technical and practical advice, but also getting more acquainted with icebergs and wildlife, Newfoundland history, culture, stories and more. All the while, the road trip was full of laughs and in good company.

Beyond the amazing photography opportunities and tips to improve my game, it was a firsthand introduction to Newfoundland and provided local encounters and hospitality around that I had hoped for and deeply appreciate. Highly recommended.

Incredible images and insights: custom photo tour of Newfoundland

Booked Michael on a whim to take the Sunrise Cape Spear tour. He promptly picked us up at 4 am for the tour. At Cape spear it became evident that the heavy fog would remain. He suggested the ghostly image of the old lighthouse in the fog. My wife brought her bright red umbrella and we had her pose then move away while the 8 second exposures captured her ghostly image. The resulting photos are probably going to be the most memorable experience in Saint Johns! That was fun!

During the photo session in the fog, we listened to the fog horn and the sound of humpback whales blowing just off shore, all on Canada Day at the farthest east point of land in North America. A true Newfoundland experience.

Later as the fog cleared, we did see a humpback cruising in the background of the other shore location. Michael finished the tour around Saint John’s with other colourful locations and provided guidance with the scenes if needed.

We had a great time and Michael was a great host. Later when looking through his book “Lost in Newfoundland “ we started seeing his work everywhere in Saint John’s. The front cover of an iceberg behind a few houses is worth noting: it was on a Canadian international stamp!

I spent 5 days with Michael and came home with thousands of photographs. Michael was an excellent guide. He knows the tourist spots and the unique locations to find the wildlife of Newfoundland. Michael's photographic expertise takes you to the right locations at the right time of day to get the best photographs. All my expectations were exceeded! Wish I could do a repeat trip.
